History of API

The oft-repeated desire of many was changed to reality when a group of physicians met in Madras (Chennai) on this day in 1944 and decided to form an association. They drew a memorandum on a set of bye laws, and registered a body in Madras on 23rd December, 1944 and called it 'THE ASSOCIATION OF PHYSICIANS OF INDIA'

The Association of Physicians of India (API) was initially formed and inaugurated in Chennai (then Madras) in 1944. Dr. Guruswamy Mudaliar was a pivotal figure in its establishment.

Establishment of Tamil Nadu State Chapter

The API Chennai City Branch played a crucial role in the formation of the Tamil Nadu State Chapter of API in 2005. Dr. S.N. Narasingan (Secretary of the Chennai Chapter) and Dr. M.S. Amaresan (Chairman of the Chennai Chapter), along with Dr. S.S. Lakshmanan, Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, Dr. P. Soundararajan, and other Executive Committee members, were instrumental in establishing this state-level association.

Aims and Objectives

To encourage and advance the knowledge, study and practice of the science of medicine in all ways.

To encourage research, including experimental work in the science of medicine.

To organize, establish, conduct, superintend or control institution for promoting, whether directly or indirectly, the study of and research in problems relating to the science of medicine.

To hold meetings and organize conferences, exhibitions, study circles or conventions for the study and discussion of problems relating to and allied with the science of medicine.

To provide instructions and education to deserving persons in the science of medicine.

To make pecuniary grants by way of scholarship, donations, subscriptions, allowances, gratuities, guarantees and otherwise to and for the benefit of deserving students, scholars and other persons who are worthy of receiving such grants by reasons of their skill and proficiency in the science of practice of medicine or their contribution to the cause of promotion of learning, research and practice of the science of medicine.

To award prizes, medals or other certificates or diploma of proficiency in the science of medicines to persons found deserving after such tests, examinations or other forms of scrutiny as may be prescribed from time to time.

To make rules prescribing standards of professional conduct for members of the Association.

To establish and maintain libraries and reading rooms.

To print, publish, distribute or sell books, pamphlets, notices, pictures, periodicals, newspapers or magazines or any other literature on any matter concerning or relating to the science or practice of medicine or the life or work of eminent persons.

To suggest, study, offer opinion and advise on, or take part in, the aiming of laws affecting the science of practice of medicine, medical education, health policies and health care activities.

To promote esprit de corps among persons studying or practicing the science of medicine and good feeling between them and members of the general public or public authorities.

To co-operative with other association or individuals to promote the objects of the Association.

To receive any gift or legacy of movable or immovable assets with or without conditions for promoting the objects of the Association.

To acquire by purchase, lease or otherwise, any properly, rights, or privileges for the purposes of the Association.

To improve, manage, develop, sell-mortgage, lease or let, under lease or sub-let, dispose of, turn to-account or otherwise deal with, all or any part of the property of the Association.

To act as trustees, agents or managers of property endowed by any persons for objects similar to those of the Association.

To draw, make, accept, endorse, execute, negotiate, purchase, lend money upon discount, hold and dispose of cheques, promissory notes, bills of exchange, drafts and other instruments and to cancel or change such instruments as per statute of Government.

To lay out, advance, invest and deal with the Association's funds for such investments and securities and generally in such manner as may be determined from time to time.

To engage such officials, servants or other persons as may be found necessary or useful for the conduct and management of the affairs of the Association.

To make bye-laws, rules and regulations of the Association and to delete, change, or add to the same from time to time.

To do all such other acts as may be necessary, incidental, conducive or convenient to the attainment of the above objects or any of them.

Doctor PhotoDR.M.R.GURUSWAMI MUDALIAR

Dr. M.R. Guruswami Mudaliar was the First Physician from South India who has formed NATIONAL API.

Along with 10 National Physicians in 1944 in Chennai. He was the first Indian to be appointed Professor of Therapeutics at the Madras Medical College. It was a highly honorable post as back in those days it was open only to experienced and knowledgeable British doctors. Dr. Guruswamy Mudaliar was widely known to be a past master at percussion diagnosis. The bridge connecting Kilpauk and Chetpet in Chennai is named after Guruswamy Mudaliar, as is the road over the bridge. A statue of Guruswamy is instated at the campus of Madras Medical College. He was honored by a special Cover released by Indian postal service.

Dr. M. S. Amaresan’s Oration is instituted in honor of Dr. M. S. Amaresan, who is the ‘Father of Nephrology’ in Tamil Nadu. He is the first Nephrologist from Tamil Nadu Medical Service and founded the Department of Nephrology in Madras Medical College in 1971. He also founded the Indian Society of Nephrology as well as the API – Tamil Nadu State Chapter.

This Prestigious Oration was instituted in recognition of Dr. M. Viswanathan, who came from Irinjalakkuda in Kerala to Chennai to study medicine at Stanley Medical College and is considered as the Father of Diabetology in India. He set up India's first center for diabetes, MV Hospital for Diabetes in 1954. Under his professional and administrative leadership, this hospital has acquired the status of a teaching institution of International Excellence.

Dr A Muruganathan has more than 40 years of teaching experience. He is the ExEmeritus Professor, The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University, International Advisor to Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow, International member of the Medical education board of RCP Glasgow and Advisory Council member of National Board of Examinations (NBE). He is a brilliant clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator who has received highly prestigious awards such as the BC Roy Award from President of India, 2005 and Best Performing Doctor Award from Tamil Nadu Government, 2014 for his impeccable service to humanity.

Dr S K Rajan Memorial Oration has been instituted in honor of Professor S K Rajan who was an eminent Physician and Pulmonologist in Chennai for more than 35 years. He was the professor and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Dean of Stanley Medical College. He was also the Vice Chairman of API Chennai Chapter. He was the founder chairman of City Physician’s association and decorated with Eminent Physician Award by Government of Tamil Nadu. He has contributed to Davidson’s Textbook of Medicine as an International advisor.

Dr. G. Ananthasubramaniam Oration was instituted by the Association of Physicians of India, Tamil Nadu Chapter in honor of Dr. G. Anantha Subramaniam, who was a Professor of Medicine in Government Royapettah Hospital, Stanley Medical College & Director at the Institute of Internal Medicine, Madras Medical College, Chennai and a Renowned Physician for more than 50 years.

Dr. M.S. ASHRAF MD., FICA., FRCP is a Renowned physician known for his administrative and clinical skills. He was Past Chairman of IMA, API, Tamil Nadu Medical Council. He was awarded with Dr.B.C. ROY National award in the category of SOCIAL MEDICAL RELIEF, received the lifetime achievement award from The Dr. MGR Medical university and recipient of Best Performing Doctor Award from Government of Tamil Nadu. He is also the examiner for PACES – MRCP at Chennai and Bangaluru.

Dr. S. Shivakumar’s Guest Lecture is instituted in honor of Dr. S. Shivakumar, who is a renowned physician in Chennai for about 40 years. He was formerly Professor of Internal Medicine at Stanley Medical College. He had also served as a Senior faculty in Medicine and Nephrology in Madras Medical College and Kilpauk Medical College. He has contributed original research work in Leptospirosis and Malaria and is in International Advisory Board Member in several Text Books in Medicine. He is a regular faculty in several International Academic Forums – including the Association of Physicians of India and published several papers in International journals.

Dr. S. Arulrhaj Guest Lecture has been instituted in honor of Prof. Dr. Sundaram Arulrhaj, who was a former Adjunct Professor of Medicine in the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. He is a Honorary National Professor as well as the Chief Patron of the IMACGP and Chairman of the Commonwealth Medical Association. He is the recipient of the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy Award. He continues his active Medical practice in Tuticorin and has a special interest is in Cardiology, Critical Care.
